Defining engineering directors.

Directors manage multiple teams; are responsibile for a significant area of technology; their org’s overall technical competence through training, hiring, and research. They are able to debug and triage major systems. They assess architectural approach and help design for the business’ intended scale. They create high performance and high velocity organizations. They address recruiting, headcount, and career growth needs. They set retention goals. They balance debt and strategy along various timelines by creating strategic and tactical roadmaps. They help their teams set goals.rF2

Directors align teams to the larger organizational strategy above all else.rN4 Conversely, we may see some of the purpose of a director through signs they are struggling.
