Factors involved in maintaining system integrity during scale.
Many things break during the growth of a business. Having a clear understanding of what’s allowed to break and what constitutes an organization’s identity will help leaders make choices about what needs to be preserved. Looking at an organization’s design profile, it seems that structure and systems will have the most volatility (by design), but the strategy ought to be reinforced—particularly its character.
The strategy is essentially the firm’s philosophy. Articulating philosophy, including values, and reinforcing it at every turn will help constituents stay on the same page where it matters rather than allowing the noise of change and history be the only guide. Clarifying the interfaces between human abstractions like teams/departments will also help, but these may be subject to too rapid evolution for it to be a primary focal point.
